Val d'Aran surroundings
Val d'Aran borders the Haute Garonne Department in France on the north; the Ribagorza county in Huesca on the southwest; the Alta Ribagorza in Lérida on the south and the Pallars Sobirá in Lérida on the east.
The Haute Garonne Department stands out above all due to the variety of its landscapes as well as to its lively capital, Toulouse. It is a very rich area from the natural, historical and architectural point of view. It is worth visiting among others, the following places: the Midday Canal, an astonishing engineering work of art; the Oueil and Lys Valleys; the Thermal Spa of Bagnères de Luchon; Rieux, a beautiful medieval village, and above all, Toulouse, known as the rose city.
Ribagorza stands out because of Aneto, the highest mountain in the Pyrenees and in fact, in the Iberian Penynsula, is located here, as well as the Natural Park of Posets Maladeta and the Pyrennaican Glaciers Natural Monument.
Alta Ribagorza is located within the province of Lérida and two rivers go through it: Noguera Ribagorzana and Noguera de Tor. To the northeast of this area we find part of the National Park of Aigüestortes and San Mauricio Lake, a gorgeous area which brings a lot of tourists above all during the summer months.
Pallars Sobirá is also located within the province of Lérida and together with Pallars Jussá forms Pallars, a historic territory. It is very difficult to get to this area mainly because of the great amount of mountains. The highest peak in Cataluña is located here, Pica d'Estats, as well as most of the National Park of Aigüestortes and San Mauricio Lake.
